Rock Songs About Getting Sober

A song list · 15 songs · updated October 2026

Getting sober rarely happens in one big moment. It's the same promise made again on a Monday, until one day finally holds. These are rock songs about that stretch: quitting, slipping, starting over and getting through today. Three of them are mine and wear the ZN Rock tag. Each one comes with a line on what it's about and a link to play it.

  1. Scar Tissue · Red Hot Chili Peppers

The lead single from Californication (1999), and the Grammy winner for Best Rock Song. Anthony Kiedis wrote it about what addiction leaves behind: the relapses, the scars and the lonely stretch of staying clean. He later gave his memoir the same name.

  2. Amazing · Aerosmith

From Get a Grip (1993), co-written by Steven Tyler, who went through rehab in 1986. It looks back at the bad years from the far side and treats getting clean as a second shot at life.

  3. Truce for Tonight · ZN RockZN Rock

Forty-seven Mondays of swearing this is the week, and every one of them came apart. It quits trying to win the whole war and asks for one thing only: one day standing, just today.

  4. Cover Me Up · Jason Isbell

The opening song on Southeastern (2013). Isbell wrote it for Amanda Shires, who helped him quit drinking in 2012, and part of it is about exactly that. It won Song of the Year at the 2014 Americana Music Awards.

  5. How You Gonna See Me Now · Alice Cooper

The lead single from From the Inside (1978), a concept album about Cooper's stay in a New York sanitarium to treat his drinking. He's coming home, afraid of how the woman waiting for him will see him after he let her down. It reached No. 12 in the US.

  6. Still No End In Sight · ZN RockZN Rock

Forty hours in, a room full of voices turning on you, and a morning that shows none of it was real. It ends in a driveway at dawn: one day down, and finally saying out loud that you can't do this alone.

  7. One Day at a Time · Joe Walsh

From Analog Man (2012), his first solo album since getting sober. Walsh took the title from the Alcoholics Anonymous mantra, and the song is about his own recovery.

  8. Life Is Beautiful · Sixx:A.M.

The band's first single (2007), from the soundtrack to Nikki Sixx's book The Heroin Diaries, which grew out of his journals from the worst year of his addiction. It's about the pull of that chaos and what you learn from pushing yourself to the edge.

  9. Tightrope · Stevie Ray Vaughan

From In Step (1989), his first album after rehab in 1986, and a Grammy winner. It's about keeping your balance while you leave old habits behind, one careful step at a time.

  10. Somewhere Safe Again · ZN RockZN Rock

Two days gone, the powder and the bottle doing the talking, and voices that turn out to be nobody at all. The last chorus still doesn't know why, but it tries anyway: maybe you're the spark, and maybe you can walk yourself back home.

  11. Just for Today · George Harrison

From Cloud Nine (1987). Harrison based it on an Alcoholics Anonymous leaflet that friends who had stopped drinking showed him, and the first verse follows its opening lines.

  12. Got to Give It Up · Thin Lizzy

From Black Rose (1979). Phil Lynott sings about trying to quit drinking and drugs and admits how hard the habit is to break. He died in 1986, at 36.

  13. Cold Turkey · John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band

A 1969 single about coming off heroin, and a No. 14 hit in the UK. This is the withdrawal itself, fever and all, not the calmer part that comes later.

  14. Sober · Tool

The first single from Undertow (1993), and No. 13 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Adam Jones has said the song and its stop-motion video are about someone the band knew who was at his creative best when he was loaded.

  15. Frantic · Metallica

From St. Anger (2003). James Hetfield's drinking came to a head while the band was making the album and he spent months in rehab partway through. Here he takes stock of the time he lost.
