Rock Songs About Addiction and Recovery
A song list · 12 songs · updated October 2026
Rock has always had songs about using and about getting clean, and the good ones never preach. This is a list of those, plus four of mine marked ZN Rock. Each entry says what the song is about and where to play it. Both playlists are further down.
Under the Bridge · Red Hot Chili Peppers
From Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). Anthony Kiedis wrote it about the loneliness of getting clean, and about the place in Los Angeles where he had used and nearly lost everything.
It's Been Awhile · Staind
Staind's biggest hit, from Break the Cycle (2001). Aaron Lewis looks back at addiction, a relationship he wrecked, and how much of the damage he did to himself.
Truce for Tonight · ZN RockZN Rock
Years of swearing today is the day and losing it by midnight. The song gives up on winning the whole war and makes a smaller deal: one day standing, just today.
Animal I Have Become · Three Days Grace
The lead single from One-X (2006), the album Adam Gontier wrote after going through rehab. It's about not recognising who you turn into when you're using.
Not a Word I Own · ZN RockZN Rock
A headache that keeps its own schedule, and a faster way to shut it out that never knows when to stop. No promises in it, just being up and awake today.
Breaking the Habit · Linkin Park
From Meteora (2003). It's about wanting out of a habit that's taking you apart and not understanding why you keep going back.
Still No End In Sight · ZN RockZN Rock
A weekend that turns into two days awake and a mind that turns a room against you. It ends with one day down and saying out loud that you can't do it alone.
Gravity · Papa Roach feat. Maria Brink
From F.E.A.R. (2015). Jacoby Shaddix wrote it about the lowest point of his marriage, when he'd let down the people closest to him, and his wife being what pulled him back.
So Far Away · Staind
From 14 Shades of Grey (2003). Aaron Lewis looks back at a darker stretch of his life from somewhere steadier, and at how far away all of it feels now.
Somewhere Safe Again · ZN RockZN Rock
Three in the morning, a room full of arguing strangers, and the powder and the bottle taking over. It's about digging for a spark in the dark and walking yourself back somewhere safe.
Pain · Three Days Grace
Also from One-X. It's about choosing to feel something, even if it hurts, over the numbness.
Never Too Late · Three Days Grace
One more from One-X. Gontier wrote it about how it's never too late to change the situation you're in.
